Great Grandma's Raisin Filled Cookies: Old Fashion Recipe

This old-fashion cookie was always made for my mom's birthday, which was around Christmas. A holiday favorite, this cookie takes a little bit longer to make than your traditional drop cookie, these are worth the effort. It will transport you back to a time of simpler things. Enjoy! -Janelle
Ingredients
  • Dough:
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • ½ cup milk
  • ½ cup butter
  • 3 cups flour
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 2 tsp cream of tartar
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • Filling:
  • 1 cup chopped raisins
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 1 tsp flour
  • ½ cup water
  • Topping:
  • 1 Egg, beaten
  • 1 Tbsp water
Instructions
  1. Place all filling ingredients in a medium saucepan and boil until thick, about 5-10 minutes.
  2. Set filling aside to cool.
  3. In a mixing bowl, cream sugar, butter and eggs.
  4. Mix in remaining ingredients.
  5. Roll out dough maybe ⅛" thick (not too thick).
  6. Use a 2-2.5" round cookie cutter and cut out.
  7. Repeat with remain dough.
  8. Place a small amount of filling on one circle and cover with another circle.
  9. Carefully press edges together to seal the filling.
  10. Mix egg and water and brush on top of sealed cookies.
  11. Sprinkle with coarse sugar, if desired.
  12. Bake until golden brown at 350F for 10-12 minutes.
