In my mind, sour dough is one of those “mystery” foods.  I love how it tastes and smells but when I try to make it myself, each time I fail.  Unless the starter is one of those that you get from a friend with exact instructions on how to use it and maintain it, I will end up killing it. I have done a lot of reading on “How to make sour dough” and it seems so easy, yet I just can’t seem to get the hang of it.

For most of the month of July, I have very little planned and thought this would be the perfect time to try making sour dough starter.  It’s warm enough in my house to keep the starter alive and allow it to get those “good bugs” that sour dough needs.

I will be doing a video blog for the next month or so to share with you my progress on how to make a sour dough starter from scratch.  The book I will be using as my guide is by Sunset, titled, “Cook Book of Breads”. It has a section in it about making your own sour dough starter as well as many recipes to go along with it.
