Last week, I had made a loaf of bread but somehow, something had gone wrong and it was very heavy and dry. I have made this recipe many, many times and I don’t know what went wrong, but nobody wanted to eat it. So this afternoon, I decided that I was going to make some croutons since salad season in coming up.  Croutons are so flexible since you add any seasoning you like and they always come out good. If you go to the store, a bag of croutons here run about $2.50 a small bag.  Making your own costs maybe $.60 or $.70.

Homemade Croutons1 small loaf of homemade bread
1-2 Tbsp oregano
1-2 Tbsp basil
2-4 Tbsp parmesean cheese (Asiago or Romano work well too)
1/4 cup butter and some garlic oil
4-6 cloves garlic

Slice bread into 1 inch slices. Then make cubes out of each slice. Toss into a fairly large bowl. Melt butter in microwave and add squeezed garlic to butter; mix. Slowly pour butter mixture over croutons while tossing croutons; mix gently until well coated. This is where you will need to add a little bit of garlic oil. Use only enough oil so the seasoning will stick to the bread.  Add spices and toss gently until well coated. Spread out on a cookie sheet and bake in a 350F oven until golden brown, turning croutons every 10 or so minutes to brown evenly.  Allow to cool and then place in ziploc bag. Enjoy!
